Her playing days may be over, but the awards are still trickling in for Meredith Knox.
Knox, a former star at Washington High School, had a stellar softball career with the Anderson (S.C.) Trojans. She succeeded on the softball field and in the classroom.
On Wednesday, Knox was named to the 2010 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Softball College Division first team.
Knox, a theology and religion major, carried a 3.90 GPA.
On the field, Knox led the Trojans with a .418 batting average, 43 runs scored and 13 doubles. As a senior, she ranked among the conference leaders with 11 home runs and 40 RBIs.
Knox was a first team All-Carolinas Conference selection, and was named to the all-tournament team at the Carolinas Conference Championship.
The two-time WDN Female Athlete of the Year finished her career hitting better than .380 with 40 homers, 106 RBIs and over 200 hits. That included 51 doubles over four seasons. Knox also scored close to 150 runs.
PHELPS PLAYING IN WORLD SERIES
Ronald Phelps, a former star at Plymouth High School, helped lead Tennessee Wesleyan College to the NAIA World Series.
A pitcher, Phelps is 1-1 with a 7.43 ERA.
The junior has made 12 appearances and has pitched a total of 13 1/3 innings for the Bulldogs. Phelps has struck out 12 batters and walked nine on the season.
The 10th-seeded Bulldogs will play No. 7 seed Embry Riddle at 11:30 p.m. Friday in the first round. It’s the first World Series appearance for Tennessee Wesleyan.
The World Series is being played in Lewiston, Idaho.
It is a double-elimination tournament with the winner being crowned either June 3 or June 4.
WATSON, FREY GO OUT IN STYLE
Charity Watson and Tiffany Frey concluded the season with a trip to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) World Series in St. George, Utah.
The Bulldogs, the No. 16 seed, fell 8-0 to top seed Salt Lake in the first game and then lost 5-2 to No. 8 seed Seward County.
Watson, a former star at Washington High School, was named the Region X Pitcher of the Year.
The freshman went 31-7 on the season. Watson fanned 450 and walked 111 in 263 1/3 innings. She allowed just 93 hits in 46 games.
She struck out 15 batters and allowed just one earned run in the loss to Seward, which went eight innings.
Frey, a former standout at Jamesville High School, concluded her softball career at the World Series. The sophomore played third base for the Bulldogs.
She hit.243 (17 for 70), scored 19 runs, knocked in 12 and stole seven bases.
JORDAN CLOSES WITH HIT
Nicole Jordan, a former star at Jamesville High School, ended her playing days with the East Carolina Pirates with a base hit.
Jordan has a pinch-hit single in ECU’s 8-3 loss to BYU in the championship game of the Austin (Texas) Regional. It came in the seventh inning.
Jordan hit .212 (14 for 66) this season. The senior had one home run, four doubles, knocked in seven and scored 12 times.
She helped lead the Pirates to a Conference USA regular-season and tournament championship.
