The Beaufort County Board of Commissioners race got more crowded late last week when two more Republicans and one Democrat signed up at the Beaufort County Board of Elections to enter the campaign.

And a second challenger officially entered the Beaufort County Board of Education race in District 5.

Republicans Larry Britt of Chocowinity and Gary Brinn of Washington became the sixth and seventh GOP candidates, respectively, for seats on the county board. They join incumbent Commissioners Hood Richardson and Jay McRoy and challengers Donald Dixon, Tony Keech Jr. and Rick Gagliano in seeking the nomination from their party.

On the Democratic side, incumbent Commissioner Jerry Langley filled out the paperwork to seek re-election. The other Democrats to sign up are Robert Belcher, Mickey Cochran and Carolyn Harding.

Four seats are available on the county board this year. Voters will select four Democrats and four Republicans to advance from the May 8 primary elections to the Nov. 6 general election.

In the campaign for Beaufort County Board of Education, David Daniel, who had previously announced his intention to run, became the third candidate to file paperwork to vie to represent District 5 on the school board. The other candidates are incumbent F. Mac Hodges, who currently serves as chairman of the board, and challenger Proctor Kidwell.

Five seats are up for election this year on the school board. Incumbents Eltha Booth, who represents District 1, and Mike Isbell, who represents District 9, did not have opposition as of Friday afternoon. In District 7, Bill Sprenkle and Carolyn Walter have filed to fill the seat currently held by Belcher. As of Friday, no candidates had filed for the District 3 race.

The school board races are nonpartisan and will not be on the ballot until November.

Filing for candidates in this year’s elections began Feb. 13 and will end at noon on Wednesday.
