Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Guirkins Elliott, age 90, a former resident of Belhaven, died Thursday, June 3, 2010 at Autumnfield of Belhaven.
Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, June 5, 2010 at Pamlico Memorial Gardens, Washington, conducted by Rev. Lee Hendricks.
Mrs. Elliott was born in Bath, N.C. on June 17, 1919. She was the daughter of the late Jesse Hollon Guirkins and Rosa Newberry Guirkins. Mrs. Elliott graduated from Bath High School. She was married to Joseph Elliott, who preceded her in death. She operated White Post Grocery after her husband died. Later, Mrs. Elliott worked for Beaufort County Schools and the Bath Historical Society. She was a member of Athens Chapel Church of Christ and later Woodards Pond Church of Christ.
Mrs. Elliott is survived by her daughter, Barbara Batchler and her husband, Paul Batchler, Sr. of Belhaven; three grandsons, Paul Batchler, Jr., Joseph Andrew Batchler, and Claude Andrew Batchler; six great grandchildren; two brothers, Rudolph Guirkins of Washington, John Guirkins of Norfolk; two sisters, Dorothy Morris of Hawassee, Ga., Kay Bray of Springfield, Va. and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Mrs. Elliott was preceded in death by a sister, Eleanor Scott and a brother, Edwin Guirkins.
The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Saturday, June 5, 2010 at Paul Funeral Home, Washington.
