Washington High School was represented by Avery Woolard, Gavin Call, Josh Crozier, Emily Pfieffer and Emily Bohn at the North Carolina State Marine Sciences Quiz Bowl on Saturday.
“Although they did not place in the final four, they performed very well and are to be congratulated,” wrote WHS science teacher Clay Campbell in an email.
The Blue Heron Bowl took place from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at East Carolina University. Teams from as far west as Burlington and as far east as Manteo competed against one another for the regional championship and the chance to participate in the National Ocean Sciences Bowl in Baltimore April 19-22.
Saturday’s bowl and NOSB are part of a program of the Consortium for Ocean Leadership based in Washington, D.C. NOSB strives to encourage and support the next generation of marine scientists, policy-makers, teachers, explorers, researchers, technicians, environmental advocates and informed residents to be stewards of the ocean.
According to Campbell, the Saturday highlight for the Washington High School team was defeating one of the two teams from North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics. Teams from East Chapel Hill High School, NCSSM and Raleigh Charter were among top scorers at Saturday’s competition.
