The Coastal Plain 16U all-stars won the Babe Ruth ENC 16U tournament this weekend at C.B. Aycock High School, sweeping the Triangle all-stars in a best-of-three series to win the state title. Coastal Plain rolled in the first game, winning 15-1 on Friday night as pitcher Brandon Marsh allowed two hits in three innings while striking out three to get the win.
Coastal Plain gave Marsh plenty of support as it rallied for 12 runs in the third inning to take a 14-1 advantage and a 1-0 series lead.
While hot hitting paved the way for a Game 1 victory, some cool pitching by Chad Briley helped ice the state title. Briley pitched a complete game gem for Coastal Plain, striking out 10 batters while letting up a mere three hits in the team’s 5-1 victory. Coastal Plain picked up a run in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the seventh to clinch the state title.
Unfortunately for the Coastal Plain, there is no regional tournament or world series in its age bracket. However, the 16U all-stars will play in a few showcase tournaments this summer.
