Alva Thorne Woolard Douglas, 95, beloved matriarch of Douglas Crossroads, died Tuesday, July 27, at Beaufort County Medical Center. She was the cornerstone of our family, and a woman of extraordinary accomplishment, strength, and humility. She left this world with the knowledge that her impact on all of us was meaningful and enduring. Our debt to her is beyond measure.
A true Southern lady, Alva loved caring for others. Her door was always open, you were always welcome, and food was always available. You were invited to sit, eat, and chat awhile. Anyone who sat at her table of collards, fried chicken, ham biscuits, banana cake, or country-style anything knew that they had just eaten Beaufort County's finest from this professional homemaker.
Alva Douglas took great pride in her home and her yard. Sitting in her swing watching the butterflies and hummingbirds was her piece of paradise on earth, and she loved to share it with her family, friends, and church members. Her capacity for unconditional love gave her the gift to see beauty in everyone and to let them know it.
She contributed greatly to her community and was a faithful member of Beaver Dam Church of Christ.
Alva Thorne was the daughter of Otis and Martha Woolard of Magnolia School Road. She was preceded in death by her husband Jack Douglas; a son, Paul Douglas; and three brothers, Charlie Walter, Billy, and Otis Boyd (O.B.) Woolard.
She is survived by one brother, Harold Woolard and his wife Beulah; two sisters, Mattie Black and Mary Mills; four children: Steve Douglas and his wife Vernell; Aaron Douglas and his wife Nancy; Anna Biggs and her husband Bruce; Jim Douglas; and a daughter-in-law, Delores Douglas Teachey. She had 11 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren.
The memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 30, at Beaver Dam Church of Christ. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Beaver Dam Church of Christ, 5125 US 264 East, Washington, NC 27889.
