The fatal crash was investigated by Trooper C.E. Ashley. Josh L. Skiles, the driver of the Mustang, was charged with driving while impaired and failing to stop at a stop sign. Other charges are pending, Pitts said.
The wreck occurred about 4:08 a.m. Skiles, who turned 21 on Monday, was driving the Mustang east on Old Bear Grass Road when he ran the stop sign at the roads intersection with U.S. 17, crossed U.S. 17 and struck an embankment, Pitts said. Then, the Mustang went airborne.
It struck a utility pole about 12 feet in the air 12 feet up on the pole, Pitts said.
The Mustang overturned, ejected Williams and landed on its top in a field, Pitts related.
Skiles was transported to Beaufort County Medical Center, where he was treated and released, according to Pitts.
