Mr. Roger E. Doerfler

Mr. Roger Earl Doerfler, age 84, a former resident of Washington, died Monday, August 23, 2010 at the University Health Systems Inpatient Hospice in Greenville.
In accordance with his wishes, Mr. Doerfler was cremated and will be interred in Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain, N.C.
Mr. Doerfler was born in Yonkers, N.Y. September 12, 1925. He was the son of the late Walter E. Doerfler and Janey Fee Doerfler. Mr. Doerfler served in the U.S. Navy Air Corps from 1942 to 1946 as an Aviation Machinist’s Mate Third Class. He was awarded the American Theatre Medal and the Victory Medal before his Honorable Discharge. After serving his country, Mr. Doerfler graduated from Stewart Technical Institute in NY as a Mechanical Engineer.
Mr. Doerfler retired from Kelsey Hayes in Detroit, Michigan as a Senior Product Engineer. During his career, he produced 15 patents in three different fields and was a member of the American Society of Tool Engineers.
In retirement, Mr. Doerfler enjoyed photography, baseball and sailing which brought him to the Pamlico River area after living in Maine for a number of years. He served as a volunteer for Beaufort County Literacy Volunteers where he enjoyed helping others. His intellect and wit will be missed by all who knew him.
Mr. Doerfler is survived by a brother, Warren Doerfler of Monmouth, Oregon and several nieces and nephews.
