Mrs. Faye Everett Greene, age 88, a resident of Belhaven, died Sunday, September 26, 2010, at Britthaven of Washington.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, September 29, 2010, at First Christian Church, 401 East 2nd Street in Washington and will be conducted by Dr. Michael Price and Rev. Amanda Hesbach. Private graveside services will be held at Martin Memorial Cemetery in Everetts, North Carolina.
Delma Faye Everett was born March 16, 1922 on the family farm outside of Robersonville, North Carolina to William Eli Everett and Ikey Cynthia Sally Wynn Everett. Faye enjoyed her childhood and grew up in a loving home. She has often said even during the Depression her parents were able to provide for their family without letting the children know how dire things were, often they even helped others less fortunate. After graduating from high school in Robersonville she attended East Carolina Teachers College in Greenville, North Carolina for three years, majoring in Home Economics.
She married R. Frank Everett in May, 1942. After he returned home from WW II they began their life in Hamilton, North Carolina. They had four daughters, Cynthia, Frankie, Susan and Elette. Frank and Faye had a rich life, enjoying traveling, spending summers with the family at the beach, being involved in politics and sharing their love of our Lord. Together they had four sons in law, ten grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren who call her Mama Faye. Frank died on July 24, 1974, after enjoying spending most of that summer at the beach.
During the years following Frank’s death, Faye enjoyed traveling with some of her girlfriends. In November 1978, Faye married Claude Greene, a friend from her school days in Robersonville. Faye gained two step children, four step grandchildren and two step great grandchildren who also call her Mama Faye. The newlyweds began their life in Micanopy, Florida. Faye and Claude enjoyed traveling in their motor home. Volunteering after Hurricane Andrew was especially meaningful to them.
In September, 1981, Faye was diagnosed with colon cancer. This event shaped much of her future life. Instead of moaning about the cards life had dealt her, she began visiting other colon cancer patients awaiting surgery. When patients had colostomies, she educated them on how to cope with their lives. She formed a group in Gainesville, Florida, for folks who had colostomies and ileostomies. This group was a life saver for many who thought they had to face this life changing situation alone. Because of her hard work with these folks, and her efforts to get a Hope Lodge built in Gainesville, on August 22, 1987, Faye was recognized as the Florida JayCee Outstanding Senior Citizen of the Year for her Continuing Community Involvement as a Senior Citizen (and there are a lot of senior citizens in Florida). She was very proud of this honor and often would show her plaque to folks that would visit her.
Faye and Claude eventually relocated to Belhaven, North Carolina. While living in Belhaven, a cute poodle named Midnight came to make his home with them. Claude died in October, 2006. Faye and Midnight lived in Belhaven until January, 2008. She moved to Britthaven Nursing Home in Washington, North Carolina. Because of her life-long faith and “glass half-full outlook” she continued to have a positive impact on lives she touched. Midnight often came for visits, he lived with Fred and Cynthia.
Survivors include her daughters, Cynthia Everett Barrett and husband Fred, Frankie Everett Daniel and husband Bert, Susan Everett Hawkins and husband Kenneth and Elette Everett Owen and husband Mike; grandchildren, Cindy Hanson and husband Kirk, Freda McKee and husband Todd, Kris Bowen and husband Stacey, Dax Hawkins and wife Kelly, Lisa Ingram and husband Stephen, Mike Barrett and wife Lynda, Jennifer Bridges and husband Travis, Ashlin Owen and Madison Owen; twenty great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren. Also, she is survived by two step children, Mike Greene and wife Fran and Toni Sprenkle and husband Stan; four step grandchildren, Timothy Greene and wife Andrea, Michael Greene, Joshua Stephens, Vanessa Kunkel and husband Ted and two step great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Walter Ellis Everett.
She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and “Mama Faye” to many. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Washington.
Her family is so grateful to the staff at Britthaven of Washington for the tender loving care they showed Faye every day.
The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Tuesday, September 28, 2010, at Paul Funeral Home of Belhaven and other times at the home of Fred and Cynthia Barrett, 67 Captains Walk Rd., Blounts Creek, North Carolina or the home of Stacey and Kris Bowen, 21 Pungo Trail, Belhaven, North Carolina.
