Music in the Streets entering 10th year
Published 8:11 pm Thursday, April 5, 2012
Strike up the band! Music in the Streets celebrates its 10th season this year, with that season kicking off April 13 at 6 p.m.
Usually held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. the third Friday of each month from April through October, Music in the Streets will be held a week early this month to coincide with the Cycle North Carolina’s Spring Ride, which comes to Washington April 13-15. More than 1,000 cyclists are expected in Washington and Beaufort County that weekend.
This season, a compilation CD featuring performers from the 2011 season will be sold at Music in the Streets events. The Washington Harbor District Association organizes music in the Streets.
“The ‘Music in the Streets 2011’ CD is in production and, hopefully, will be in our hands for the April 13 event. The 15-song compilation includes a variety of styles of music,” said LaVon Drake, a Music in the Streets volunteer. “To be eligible for the CD, the artists were involved in the MITS 2011 events and have submitted original works or public-domain works. If you and/or your band are interested in submitting a song for consideration on the ‘Music in the Streets 2012’ CD, send us a message or email, or give us a call to sign up for an event.”
For more information about the CDs or to sign up to perform at Music in the Streets (openings available for June through October) call 252-947-1487 or send email to whda@washingtononthewater.com.
WHDA is seeking volunteers to help with Music in the Streets. In addition to Drake, other volunteers returning this season include Allen Futrell, Sara Woolard and J.B. Mayes.
The lineup for April’s Music in the Streets includes Tee Jay Jones and the Pamlico Sound Machine on the main stage. Described as a “throw-back” band, the musicians play soul, blues and R&B. Also on the lineup are Both, a Raleigh band that includes Craig Newton, who’s performed at Music in the Streets events in the past, and the Riverboat Jazz Band, a New Orleans-style jazz ensemble that includes area residents.
Rounding out the cast of performers are Kara Carlson (solo act from Kinston), John “Singer” Benson (solo act, local musician), The Southerner’s Band (Southern rock), Living Waters (praise band), 3 Pair (miscellaneous), St. James and Friends (bluegrass/gospel group from Greenville) and the Main Street Shaggers.
Pecheles Toyota/Ford is the presenting sponsor this year. Other sponsors include Down on MainStreet, Coca-Cola, Tayloe’s Hospital Pharmacy, Sloan Insurance, Park Boat Co. and Stewart’s Jewelry Store.
Other Music in the Streets events are scheduled for May 18, June 15, July 20, Aug. 17, Sept. 21 and Oct. 19.
