Mrs. Elaine Bowen Harris, age 92, a resident of 2456 Free Union Church Road, Pinetown, died Thursday evening, October 28, 2010 at home.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday October 31, 2010 at Pamlico Memorial Gardens officiated by Kent Gurganus. Stan Woolard, Ensley Woolard, Brad Cox, Bonnie G. Waters, Starley Stell and Marshall Lilley will serve as pallbearers.
Mrs. Harris was born in Beaufort County on February 9, 1918. She was the twin daughter and last surviving child of Bennie Bruce Bowen, Sr. and Matilda Respess Bowen. After the death of her mother, at the age of six, she and her twin sister, Christine, were raised by their older sister, Blanche Bowen Waters and her husband, C. Warren Waters. She married Lester Samuel Harris, Sr. who preceded her in death on March 27, 2001. Mrs. Harris was the oldest member of the Pinetown Church of Christ.
Mrs. Harris is survived by her sons: Lester Harris, Jr. and wife, Gertrude of Pinetown and Terry Black and wife, Tracy of Washington; two grandchildren: Lorrie Harris Sheppard and husband, Scott of Pinetown and Stacey Lee Harris and wife, Cortney of Pinetown; her great-grandson: Colby Woolard and great-granddaughter: Addison Laine Harris. In addition to her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by her daughter, Eleanor Mae Harris on September 26, 1995; her five sisters: Blanche Bowen Waters, Daisy Bowen Cutler, Lola Bowen Ambrose, Grace Bowen and her twin sister, Christine Bowen Black and five brothers: Floyd Bowen, Dempsey Bowen, Herman Bowen, William (Bill) Bowen and Bennie Bruce Bowen, Jr.
The family will receive friends 6:30-8 p.m. today at Paul Funeral Home in Washington and other times at the home of her son, located at 2456 Free Union Church Road, Pinetown.
