Washingtons Keane Graham hauled in a Jimmy Williams pass and turned it into a 30-yard touchdown, which after a two-point conversion, gave the Pam Pack a 29-28 lead on the road against Coastal Conference foe West Carteret with under two minutes left in the game.
The Patriots would not be out-done.
West Carteret pieced together a thrilling last-minute drive that ended when star running back John Papillon scored from 12 yards out after taking pitch to reclaim the lead and push his team past the Pam Pack 36-29 on Friday night in the final game of the regular season.
Both teams entered Friday Nights game in a tie for second place, along with D.H. Conley, with identical 4-2 conference records, but after the loss Washington dropped to third place and finished the regular season at 5-6 (4-3).
It was 14-14 at the half, Washington coach Sport Sawyer said. At the end of the game they went up 28-21 with under four minutes left in the game. We came back and scored and went for a two-point conversion to go up 29-28 with under two minutes left. Then they just put together some big plays and scored with 15 seconds left. … I credit their kids, they played hard and we played hard too.
Jimmy Williams led the Pam Pack as he threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more. Williams connected with William Ellegor for a 6-yard TD pass before he threw the 30-yarder to Graham.
I thought offensively all the guys played pretty well, Sawyer said. We had some big plays, Jimmy threw the ball well and ran the ball pretty well.
