YEATESVILLE — After leading Southside 8-7 at halftime Northside committed four turnovers, and in doing so turned over possession of the anchor as the Seahawks topped the rival Panthers 40-14 in the Anchor Bowl Friday Night.
All four of Northside’s turnovers led to Seahawks touchdowns and put a sour note on an otherwise well-played game against their fellow Four Rivers Conference foe.
For the second week in a row Southside’s defense put forth a fantastic effort and seemed to make plays every time the team needed them.
Those plays help set up a Seahawks’ offense that struggled in the first half, but had several big moments in the second.
Southside (8-3, 4-3) quarterback Terril Moore had a tremendous game as he had touchdown runs of 2- and 32-yards, while throwing two TD passes, both to Bryan Dixon, to lead his team past Northside (3-8, 1-4) in the regular season finale.
Moore finished the game completing four of his seven attempts for 111 yards.
Seahawks’ running back Julien Brown scored the game-winning TD as he scampered into the end zone from five yards out in the third quarter to put his team up 15-8.
As a team, Southside ran for 236 yards on 44 attempts, while Northside tallied 245 yards on 40 carries.
Southside coach DeWayne Kellum, who is in his second stint with the school, said that he was happy his team could reclaim the coveted anchor.
“When I was here before it stayed at our place,” Kellum said with a smile. “So it needs to be back where it was.”
The Panthers were able to run the ball effectively as they were led by the efforts of Taekwon Mackey and DeMarquez Martin. However, the team’s momentum was sapped every time Northside turned the ball over.
“When were up 8-7 at the half and I thought we really played some great defense and got some good holds,” Northside coach Keith Boyd said. “Then we came out in the second half and did exactly what we talked about doing, we marched the ball down field. Then we just had a (fumble) and from there it just seemed like every time we touched the football in the second half we found a way to put it on the ground.”
Mackey scored both of Northside’s touchdowns, with his first coming from 20 yards out in the first quarter and his second from 26 yards out in the third.
