Raymond “Ray” Dodd Mutherspaw Jr., 62, a resident of 5340 Boyds Road, Grimesland, died Monday, May 7, 2012.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Oakdale Cemetery, Washington, conducted by Junior Edwards.
Mr. Mutherspaw was born in Beaufort County on March 28, 1950. He was the son of the late Raymond Dodd Mutherspaw Sr. and Quillie Ruth Elks Mutherspaw. Mr. Mutherspaw served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was a heavy equipment operator for Waters Bulldozing Service. Mr. Mutherspaw loved drag racing and once raced at tracks in New Bern and Kinston. In his spare time, he loved to hunt.
On Aug. 6, 1971, Mr. Mutherspaw married the former Claudia Woolard, who survives.
Surviving with his wife are one daughter, Susan Mutherspaw Mitchell of the home; two grandsons, Michael Collins, who is in the U.S. Marine Corps, and Bryon Mutherspaw of the home; great-granddaughter Kayden Collins of the home; brother Donnie Mutherspaw of Chocowinity; two sisters, Mary Curlings of Chocowinity and Judy Chandler of Wilmar and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Mutherspaw was preceded in death by a daughter, Elizabeth Michelle Mutherspaw, and two brothers, Jackie and Steven Mutherspaw.
The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. today at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory in Washington and other times at the home.
