It was all spirit and fun at the Boys &Girls Club Saturday as a local motorcycle club held a charity fundraising drive.
The HeadHunterz MC Inc. Annual Charity Basketball Tournament went off smoothly at the Boys &Girls Club in Washington.
Dervin Brown, a representative with HeadHunterz MC Inc., said the tournament was to raise money for Aswa Rodgers who is in need of a heart transplant.
We have a basketball tournament going here in Washington and one in Belhaven, Brown said. So far, it looks to be a promising turnout.
Brown added that the funds would be divided equally between the Boys &Girls Club and the Aswa Rodgers Heart Transplant Fund.
Marquise Norfleet, HeadHunterz MC Inc. president, said a portion of the funds raised will also go to the Tasha Smith Scholarship Fund.
The tournament began Saturday morning with various teams of 10-12 players paying the $125-per-team registration fee. Spectators paid an entrance fee of $2 per person.
We lost the tournament, Norfleet said. But thats not why we played. We played so we could raise money for Mr. Rodgers heart transplant.
Norfleet added that the HeadHunterz actually came in last place behind teams Boston, who placed first, and the True Ballers, who placed second.
All-in-all, it was a very good tournament and charity fund raiser, he said. I think everyone had a very good time and things just went very well.
Norfleet added that even if people did not play, they got to see some very spectacular basketball as players showcased their best dunks and alley-oops, and much more.
People were coming in left and right all day long, Norfleet said. We didnt even finish the last game until around 8 p.m. It was a really good tournament.
The total raised for Rodgers and the Boys and Girls Club had not been calculated but it is estimated to be somewhere in the $800 to $900 range.
Norfleet added that this will be an annual charity fund raiser that they will continue to host.
