JAMESVILLE — In a competitive conference game Tuesday, a suicide squeeze gave the Bullets enough momentum to squeeze out a 3-0 victory over the Mattamuskeet Lakers.
The game was scoreless nearing the midway mark when Clifton Moore crushed a ball between the Lakers’ center- and right-fielder, bringing Moore safely to third base with no outs at the bottom of the third inning.
Mattamuskeet pitcher Marshall Gill would dismantle the next batter with three, systematic strikes — one of his 13 strikeouts for the night.
With one out and Moore still on third, Jamesville coach Jerry Ange called for Bullets’ batter Tyler Ange to execute the squeeze play.
On Gill’s second pitch, Jamesville’s Moore bolted for home, and Ange bunted the ball far enough for Moore to swipe the plate unchecked.
In the fifth inning, two more Bullet players would find home plate, giving Jamesville a 3-0 edge against the Lakers.
Whitley earned the win Tuesday as Jamesville improved to 2-1, 2-2.
Ange said the team would continue to concentrate on hitting.
Tuesday, the Bullets tallied eight hits against Gill.
Taylor Whitley allowed nine Lakers to get on base and threw eight strikeouts.
He said what the Lakers critically lacked Tuesday was intensity.
The Bullets’ Bob Lilley created Jamesville’s second scoring opportunity, batting in Ange with a pop-fly that the Lakers’ second baseman bumbled.
On the next pitch, Lilley stole second and capitalized on a botched attempt to tag him out by taking third. Coleman Perry sent Lilley home on his single, cinching the game up in the Bullets’ favor.
Mattamuskeet plays Columbia at home Thursday.
