Mrs. Helen Jean Nelson, 94, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2011, at Beaufort County Medical Center in Washington.
A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 4, 2011, at Paul Funeral Home of Washington and will be conducted by Derik Davis.
Helen Jean was born July 1, 1916, in Racine, Wisc., the daughter of the late Ralph and Alma Kehl. In 1940, she was united in marriage to Wilbur Nelson and resided in Racine until 1977, when they retired to the northwoods of Wisconsin in Lac du Flambeau. They lived in their lakefront paradise until Wilburs death in 2008. Since that time, Helen Jean has been a resident of Chocowinity.
Helen Jean was also preceded in death by a brother, Ralph Kehl, sisters, Elizabeth Sink and Joey Jones, and daughter-in-law, JoAnn Nelson. Surviving are sons James (Shirley) Nelson of Waukesha, Wisc., Steve Nelson of Ocala, Fla., and daughter Peg (Dean) Karas of Chocowinity. Also surviving are grandchildren Rachel (Curt) Stephan of Big Bend, Wisc., Brian (Angie) Nelson of Waukesha, Wisc., Mike (Tina) Nelson of Pleasant Prairie, Wisc., and Nikki Nelson of Asheville, as well as eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Helen Jean was a nature and animal lover, a talented artist, an excellent cook and an avid card player. Most of all, she was devoted to her family and loved spending time with them Up North.
The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. until the time of memorial service Friday at Paul Funeral Home of Washington and other times at the home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of ones choice.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the staffs at Ridgewood Manor and Beaufort County Medical Center for their care and compassion. Special thanks also go out to the many friends that have helped comfort her over the past several weeks.
