A trio of area musicians will present “An Afternoon of Baroque Music” to benefit Eagle’s Wings, a Washington-based food pantry.
The trio, consisting of a cellist, an organist and a recorder player, will offer this concert to raise money for Eagle’s Wings beginning at 4 p.m. Feb. 13.
The concert will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church in Chocowinity.
“It’s just a nice afternoon of chamber music,” said Sally Love, executive director of Eagle’s Wings.
Eagle’s Wings helps feed hundreds of eastern North Carolina residents each year. On average, Eagle’s Wings serves 250 families per month, Love said in December 2010.
Admission to the upcoming concert will be free, though donations will be accepted on behalf of Eagle’s Wings through a “love offering,” said Robert Hawkins, one of the event’s organizers.
The players are Hawkins, a recorder player and retired Methodist minister who lives in Washington; Bryna Coonin, a cellist and reference librarian at Joyner Library of East Carolina University; and Shirley Kuhn, an organist and choir master at Trinity.
The musical program will be made up of works by six baroque composers, including George Frideric Handel and Antonio Vivaldi, according to notes provided by Hawkins.
“The unusual thing about this is all of those composers were contemporaneous,” said Hawkins. “Some of them even knew each other.”
The composers were born between 1660 and 1690, and died between 1717 and 1768, Hawkins’ notes read.
“It’s sort of a smorgasbord of the late baroque,” said Hawkins.
