Barbara A. Lander, 77, was born in Yonkers, N.Y., the daughter of the late Herman and Lillian Goetz.
She attended public schools and graduated high school in Yonkers. Upon finishing, she went to work in Title Insurance Company and was a certified notary public. She met her husband, Stanley J., through mutual friends and thereafter had 54 years of successful marriage.
Barbara was an avid gardener and grew her plants from seed in her greenhouse. She gave flowers to the public by placing them near the road. She affectionately was known as “the flower lady.” Barbara ran the Bridge Group in the Plantation and also played in the Bath Group. She was also a member of the First United Methodist Choice and a volunteer for Eagle’s Wings.
Along with her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Karen Ward and husband, Robert of Yonkers, N.Y., and Marilyn Lander of San Francisco, Calif.; two sons, Mark Lander of Newark, Del., and Stephen Lander and wife, Karen, of Colfax; and two grandchildren.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, Feb. 12, 2011, at Hillside Funeral Service from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. A funeral will be conducted on Sunday, Feb. 13, 2011, at the First United Methodist Church at 2 p.m., officiated by the Rev. Danny Allen.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Marion L. Shepard Cancer Center, 1209 Brown St., Washington, NC 27889.
