Mr. William Henry “Bill” Mayo, Jr., age 85, a resident of 44 Mill Road, Aurora, NC died Friday February 11, 2011 at the VA Hospital in Durham, NC.
A funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Monday February 14, 2011 at the South Creek Missionary Baptist Church officiated by Rev. Gary Williams and Rev. Dennis Brown. A private burial will be at the Mayo Family Cemetery of Campbell’s Creek. Steven Whichard, Jason Whichard, Greg Ireland, Steve Harris, Johnny Toler and Tim Potter will serve as pallbearers.
Mr. Bill was born in Beaufort County on September 3, 1925 son of the late William H. Mayo, Sr. and the late Etta Edwards Mayo. He was a 1940 graduate of Aurora High School. Mr. Bill served his country in the US Navy during World War II. He was stationed on the Thomas E. Fraser Destroyer from 1943 to 1946 during the Pacific Theater and his ship was the first to arrive for the signing of the Peace Treaty. After returning to Aurora he married the former Myra N. Harris on October 16, 1948 who survives. Mr. Bill was a lifetime member of the former Aurora Post VFW. He attended South Creek Missionary Baptist Church.
Surviving along with his wife Myra of the home is a daughter: Linda Mayo Miller and her husband Brad of Washington; a son: William H. “Billy” Mayo, III of Apex; two sisters: Jean Keel of Kingsport, TN and Ella Toler of Alliance; four grandchildren: Steven Whichard, Jason Whichard and his wife Candice, Rachel Coppersmith and Sara Miller Cisnerous and her husband Jr; two great grandchildren: Steele Whichard and Jayde Cisnerous and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Bill was preceded in death by four sisters: Anna M. Lupton, Retha M. Witt, Betty M. Brown and Clara M. Whorton.
The family will receive friends 10:00 AM until the funeral hour Monday at the church and at other times at the home located at 44 Mill Road Aurora.
In lieu of flowers the family kindly asks that memorial contributions be made to South Creek Missionary Baptist Church, South Creek Road, Aurora, NC 27806.
