David Harold Gurganus, 74, died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2011, at his home following an extended illness in the Farm Life Community of Martin County, N.C. The funeral service will be conducted Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Piney Grove Baptist Church with the burial to follow at Tice Cemetery. The family received friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Monday Feb. 14, 2011, at Piney Grove Baptist Church.
Mr Gurganus was born Aug. 19, 1936 in Martin County. He was the son of the late Aubrey Harold Gurganus and Mamie Clyde Lilley Gurganus. He graduated from Williamston High School. Following his Army military service, Mr Gurganus became a general contractor and formed Gurganus Builders Inc. After several years, he also established Gurganus Realty in Washington and most recently Harkers Island Campground Properties in Carteret County N.C.
Until his illness, Mr Gurganus was an active member of the Piney Grove Baptist Church. He joined Sept. 14, 1952. He taught Sunday School and held other offices in the church including serving on the Piney Grove Building Committee.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Betsy Riddick Gurganus of Williamston, two sons David Skip Gurganus and wife, Joanna, and Tracy Alan Gurganus and wife, Michel, all of Jamesville, a daughter Penny G Askew and husband, Billy Ray Askew, of Pinetown, N.C., five grandchildren Kelsey Lane Gurganus, Ethan Alan Gurganus, Aubrey Thomas Gurganus, Ruth Ann Askew and William Jesse Askew, a brother C. Mitchell Gurganus of Highlands, N.C.
