Truck-driving classes offered
Published 6:56 pm Saturday, May 19, 2012
Classes begin June 19 for a joint BCCC and Pamlico Community College truck-driver training program, which will train students to drive a tractor-trailer and obtain their Class-A commercial driver’s licenses.
The truck-driving school is operated by the Division of Continuing Education at each college.
The program includes classroom instruction, off-road vehicle-control-skills instruction and behind-the-wheel driving of a Class-A combination vehicle. Students will gain experience driving during various hours of the day and night and be road tested.
Students are required to participate in human-resources development and Career Readiness Certification training. The CRC component will afford students the distinction of achieving a nationally recognized workplace Career Readiness Certificate to complement and enhance job-related qualifications. The CRC piece will be presented at each college.
The course, which takes about 16 weeks to complete, ends Oct. 7.
Class will held be from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays in Building 9, Room 935 on the BCCC campus. Students from the Pamlico Community College service area who are attending the course will meet in the Johnson Building, Room 121. Driving practice will be held 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. That class meets in Building 7 on the BCCC campus. Some of the driving activities may be conducted in the Pamlico CC service area.
The cost of the program is $245, including $175 for registration, $40 fee for a random drug test and a $30 CRC testing fee. Textbooks and other required materials are an additional $103.75. The fee for an additional road test, if needed, is $125.
Each student is required to have a Department of Transportation health card and original drug test at the time of registration. Students are required to have their Class-A CDL permits at the first class meeting June 19. Students will be subjected to random drug screening throughout the course.
Class size is limited to 24 students.
Students may register in person in Building 8, Room 802, on the BCCC campus. BCCC accepts Visa and MasterCard. Checks may be made payable to Beaufort County Community College. To register at Pamlico Community College, contact Tammy Spain at 249-1851, ext. 303.
The course will begin on the scheduled date and time, pending sufficient student enrollment for the class. Otherwise, the course may be postponed or canceled.
