John “Lawry” Bennetts

Mr. John Lawry Bennetts, age 89, a resident of Washington, N.C., died on Monday, March 14, 2011, at Beaufort County Medical Center.╩
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 18, 2011, at the First United Methodist Church in Washington and will be conducted by the Rev. Danny Allen.╩Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery.
Mr. Bennetts was born in St. Just, Cornwall, England, on May 19, 1921, son of the late Rev. Francis Thomas Bennetts and his wife, Ethel Lawry Bennetts.╩Mr. Bennetts earned his chemical engineering degree from Clarkson College of Technology in 1943. Lawry began his career as a chemical engineer in West Virginia, where he met and, in 1947, married Marzenia Akers Bennetts, who preceded him in death in 1999. They lived for many years in Stamford, Conn., and then Haverford, Pa.╩After his retirement in 1984, Mr. Bennetts and his wife sailed together all along the East coast from Mystic, Conn., to the Bahamas until they both decided to stop and make their home here in Beaufort County.
Mr. Bennetts was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, Washington, N.C.; the United States Power Squadrons – Pamlico Squadron; the Waterway Radio & Cruising Club; and the BARC Amateur Radio Club.
Survivors include two sons: Roger Bennetts, his wife Debra and their daughter Emily of Norwalk, Conn.; and Raymond Bennetts of California.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Friday, March 18, 2011, at the First United Methodist Church.
