The Washington man wanted on an assault with a deadly weapon charge turned himself into police Thursday.

William Earl Little, 19, and his father arrived at the Washington Police Department around 4 p.m. Thursday after media had broadcast his picture on television and had it published in print media.

Little was wanted for Monday night’s shooting on East Seventh Street in Washington. Police said an altercation between Little and James David Riddick over a bicycle ended in gunfire. A gunshot wound to Riddick’s abdomen sent him to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville. The injury is considered nonlife-threatening.

Little said he turned himself in because he had seen himself on TV the night before and was unaware he was being sought by police, said Lt. William Chrismon of the Washington Police Department.

“It was a peaceful resolution to a situation that might not have worked out that way, if he’d done things differently,” said Chrismon.

Chrismon said that Little maintains his innocence and said he has no knowledge of Monday night’s shooting.

Little was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and possession of a firearm by a felon.

“He did the right thing by turning himself in, and now we’ll let the courts handle it,” said Chrismon. “I wish more people would do that. Just because he’s been charged doesn’t mean he’s guilty. That’s up for the courts to decide.”
