The Beaufort County Health Department is observing STD Awareness Month

Sexually transmitted diseases are a public health issue across the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates there are approximately 19 million new cases of STDs every year in the nation. STDs are most common among people ages 15-24.

Anyone who is sexually active could be at risk for getting HIV or other STDs. If detected early, some STDs can be cured. For STDs that can’t be cured, if diagnosed they can be managed with proper medical care. Beaufort County Health Department offers free and confidential HIV and STD testing. To make an appointment for testing, call 252-946-1902.

To learn more about being at risk for HIV or STDs, participate in RESPECT, a program that involves two short, one-on-one counseling sessions that provide information on ways to reduce the risk of getting STDs. For more information, call Megan Price at 252-940-5090.
