YEATESVILLE — The Northside Easter Baseball/Softball tournament is set to swing into action today as a total of nine different schools will head over to Yeatesville for the two-day event.

Competing in the baseball tournament will be a couple of Four Rivers Conference rivals in Northside (7-12, 7-5), Riverside (14-4, 9-3) and Southside (3-10, 0-10), along with Northeastern (N/A), which hails from the NE Coastal Conference.

The softball bracket is loaded with quality teams who also are familiar with each other as Northside (4-9, 4-6), South Creek (9-3, 4-2) and Manteo (N/A) are all Four Rivers Conference foes. Joining them will be Edenton (N/A NE Coastal Conference), Pamlico (15-2, 8-0, Coastal Plains) and Farmville Central (N/A Eastern Plains). (All records are courtesy of Maxpreps.com.)

The softball side of the tournament will begin today at 10 a.m. when Edenton takes on Northside, and the last game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. when Pamlico faces Farmville.

The softball tourney is split into two pools with Pool A consisting of Northside, Edenton and South Creek while Pool B contains Pamlico, Farmville and Manteo. Overall six games will be played on Friday and three will be held on Saturday.

The baseball tournament is slated to start at 1 p.m. today when Manteo squares off against Riverside. The winner of that game will stay on the field to play Southside at 4 p.m. After that, Northside will take on Northeastern at 7 p.m.

“It’s kind of like pool play,” Northside baseball coach/athletic director Keith Boyd said. “Basically, we are trying to get everybody about two or three games and whoever can go 2-0 should be playing for a championship.”

Boyd’s Panthers have been one of the hottest teams around and said that he hopes that trend continues.

“We’ve have won seven in a row and we put ourselves in a good position to make the playoffs,” Boyd said. “Whenever you are hot you hope you continue to stay hot.”

The Panthers’ softball team has also heated up as it topped conference leaders Riverside a week ago. The Panthers will look to ride that momentum as it heads into this year’s tourney which is loaded with good teams.

“The softball bracket is pretty strong as far as a bunch of teams in the tournament are likely to make the playoffs,” Boyd said. “The playoffs are only a few weeks away, this should be a good experience for those teams to have before the postseason.”
