George Edwards Gibbs, Sr.

Mr. George Edwards Gibbs, Sr., of 1103 Pennsylvania Ave., Washington, died Saturday, April 30, 2011, at Beaufort County Medical Center.

George was born Sept. 5, 1940, to the late Clement and Mary Sidney Jones Gibbs, Sr. he graduated from P.S. Jones High School.

George served a tour of duty in the US Army. He was a member of Metropolitan AME Zion Church, where he was honored Man of the Year 2009, member of memorial garden, and organ fund committees and Metropolitan Housing CDC subdivision. Keyesville Road will be named the George E’s Place. George was a loyal member of Hiram Lodge #11, Jeptha Chapter #1, a charter member of MD Chapter #74, Holy Royal Arch Mason, New Born Consistory #30, a Shriner of Arabian Temple #1036.

George leaves to cherish his memories a devoted and caring wife Dorothy of Washington, N.C.; five sons, George Gibbs Jr., of Chocowinity, N.C.; Lindall Gibbs and Clement Gibbs, both of Washington, N.C.; Kevin Gibbs of Chicago, Ill. And Walter Rasby of Charlotte, N.C. One daughter, Demetrice Leary, Williamston, N.C.

One sister, Lalar Thompson, Washington, N.C.; two brothers, Johnny Gibbs and Ronald Gibbs, both of Washington, N.C.; 12 grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren.

George was preceded in death by a son, Michael Gibbs and siblings, Sadie Gibbs, Mary Taylor, Pamela G. Blount and Clement Miller Gibbs, Jr.

Burial in Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation on Friday evening at L.R. Randolph Memorial Chapel 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. and other times at the home.
