Dr. Allie McLeod Stanton

Dr. Allie McLeod Stanton of Plymouth, N.C., died Thursday, May 12, 2011, unexpectedly in his home. He was 94 years old. A memorial service for Dr. Stanton will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 15, 2011, at Plymouth United Methodist Church with the Reverend Jay Clark and the Reverend James Hagwood officiating. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall following the service.

Dr. Stanton was born April 12, 1917, in Sylacauga, Ala. He was one of three sons born to Winfield Stanton and Cathleen McLeod Stanton. A physician and general surgeon, he received his formal education at Auburn University and his medical degree from the University of Tennessee. He completed his internship at Lloyd Nolan Hospital in Birmingham. Dr. Stanton served three years in the United States Army Medical Corp during World War II with the Fifth Surgical Group of the Ninth Army. He arrived in Europe within days of the Allied Invasion of France in 1944.

Following his military service, he served his residency at Norfolk General Hospital, Norfolk, Va. Awarded a Fellowship, he received his surgical training in Spartanburg, S.C. While there, he met the former Margaret Spires of Edenton, N.C., and they married on Dec. 25, 1945. In 1951, Dr. Stanton and Margaret moved to Edenton where he established a private practice as a family doctor and general surgeon. Then in 1958, he and his family moved to Plymouth where for 26 years he was the town surgeon. Ever caring for his patients, he could be seen zigzagging around Washington County on his motorcycle or walking from his home to the hospital.

Dr. Stanton helped found the Shore Medical Group and served as a past president of the Pamlico Medical Society. Also, he was a member of the Southeast Surgical Congress and the American Society of Surgery.

Dr. Stanton was a lifelong Methodist and served for over 20 years as a lay delegate to the North Carolina Annual Conference. For nearly 50 years, he served as a Trustee of Plymouth United Methodist Church. During these years, he worked with many community groups and charitable organizations, including the Rotary Club where he served as president, and the St. Jude’s Hospital for Children. For his many contributions to the community, he was awarded the Willis Bowen Public Service Award by the Washington County Chamber of Commerce. New entrance doors at the Plymouth United Methodist Church were dedicated to Dr. Stanton for his 94th birthday.

He was preceded in death by his wife Margaret and brothers James, Gene and Winfield and sister Kitty Pritchard. Surviving is his son, Dr. Edward Stanton and wife Linda of Sanford, N.C. Their children Craig Stanton, Jeffrey Stanton and PFC Scott Stanton, U.S.M.C.; sister, Marian Aycock of Douglas, Ga. and sister-in-law, Prue Stanton of Tuscaloosa, Ala. Also, he is survived by his current wife, Hope Jones Stanton and her children, Doward Jones, Jr. and his wife Arden, Lynn Ennis and husband Larry, Allen Jones and his wife Georgina; five grandchildren and four great-granchildren.
