The Beaufort County Board of Commissioners took action on a number of items on its agenda Monday night. In those actions, the board:
• Delayed action on an agreement between Pitt County and the Beaufort County Health Department to establish a nine-county program to “address tobacco-free living, healthy eating and active living” that is also known as the  Region 10 Community Transformation Project.
• Voted unanimously to authorize the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office to accept a $58,059.96 Drug Diversion Grant awarded from the Governor’s Crime Commission which will be used to hire an officer to investigate crimes involving prescription drugs and educate pharmacists and other health-care providers about the issue, according to information presented to the commissioners.
• Voted 6-1 to approve $11,695.84 in travel requests with Commissioner Hood Richardson casting the sole dissenting vote.
• Voted unanimously to authorize the Beaufort County Health Department to accept a $6,000 grant from Vidant Health for the My Plate Project, a child-nutrition education program.
• Voted 6-1 to authorize the health department to accept a $5,000 grant from the Dr. Ann F. Wolfe Endowment for Kids in the Garden, a project that will target about 600 children at Eastern Elementary School. Richardson cast the sole dissenting vote.
• Voted unanimously to authorize Vann Lewis with McDavid Associates Inc. of Farmville to apply for a $1 million grant from the Economic Development Administration. The EDA is expected to award grants to governments to help upgrade infrastructure affected by hurricanes or other natural disasters.
• Voted unanimously to approve budget amendments to the animal control, health, emergency management and county manager budgets, including one amendment that reflects a $20,000 donation by Steve and Charlotte Anastasion to the Betsy Bailey Nelson Animal Control Facility for a quarantine area for new cats that come into the shelter.
• Voted unanimously to approve a slate of over 35 delegates to represent the county at the Southern Albemarle Association and delayed until September appointments to the Beaufort Regional Health System Board of Commissioners.
• Unanimously approved a resolution citing the 80th anniversary of the N.C. Symphony and unanimously approved a resolution proclaiming September as Hunger Action Month.
