Mr. Richard James Steinbacher, age 71, a resident of Lakeview Lane, Pamlico Plantation, Washington, NC, died Thursday, August 23, 2012 at Ridgewood Manor & Rehabilitation Center. A celebration of his life will be held Monday, August 27, 2012 at 11:00 AM at First Presbyterian Church officiated by Pastor Lee Kinney. There will be a reception for family and friends immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall. Burial with military honors will be at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, August 29, 2012 at National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Bridgeville, PA.
Mr. Steinbacher was born in Williamsport, PA on June 2, 1941 son of the late Kenneth and Ruth Worthington Steinbacher. He graduated from Lycoming College in Williamsport, PA in 1964. Following graduation he joined the US Army, attended Officer Candidate School and served in the Vietnam War where he was awarded the Bronze Star. Mr. Steinbacher spent the next 40 years working for the Pennsylvania, Penn Central and Conrail railroads in various engineering positions. He finished his career working for Amtrak in Philadelphia, PA as Assistant Vice President of Engineering.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Sharon Patterson-Steinbacher of the home and his four children, Maj. Richard Steinbacher, US Army (Lisa) of Boone, NC, Kimberly Steinbacher-Dunn (Bill) of New Hope, PA, Dr. Chrissy Steinbacher-Keller (Peter) of Baltimore, MD and Heather Steinbacher-McFeeters ( Jim) of Pittsburgh, PA and six grandchildren, Julian, Alex, Emily, Ellie, Tristan, Anna and Sara who is expected to enter this world in 4 weeks.
Upon retirement he was able to enjoy his lifelong hobby of sailing. Many trips were made to various destinations on the East Coast aboard his beloved sailboat the “Black Knight.” He has been a member of several yacht clubs in the Washington area including Washington Yacht and Country Club, Pamlico Sail and Power Squadron and the Pamlico Plantation Yacht Club where he served as Commodore. In all of this his most prized enjoyment was his family, especially his grandchildren.
