Michael Weston “Mike” Rhem

Mr. Michael Weston “Mike” Rhem, age 56, a resident of the Ponzer community, Belhaven, passed away Sunday, August 26, 2012, after a long and courageous battle.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, August 28, 2012, at Mt. Olive Church of Christ Cemetery in Ponzer, conducted by Randy Clayton.
The following will serve as pallbearers: Robert “Bobby” Guthrie, Joseph Williams, Mikey Williams, Jose Ramirez, Bobby “Tink” Armstrong and Ray Sheppard.
Mike was born on November 2, 1955, to the late John Edward “Ed” and Nancy Elizabeth Wallace Rhem. He lived his entire life in Hyde County. While being a quiet man, Mike was always quick to say he wasn’t interested in moving any further west. Since graduation from John A. Wilkinson High School in 1974, he worked with various people, always operating heavy equipment. Until his retirement in February 2012, Mike worked with Armstrong, Inc. for more than 25 years. He had earned the distinguished honor of being “one of the best operators anywhere.”
Survivors include his wife, Sue Carter Rhem; son, John Michael Rhem of Boone; daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Rhem of the home; brother, Larry Rhem of Grifton; sister and brother-in-law, Linda R. and Mike Buckner of Kill Devil Hills; a niece and a nephew.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the graveside and other times at the home, located at 34532 U.S. Hwy 264 East, Belhaven.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made to the Marion L. Shepard Cancer Center, 1209 Brown Street, Washington, N.C. 27889 or Community Home Care and Hospice, 814 Washington Plaza, Washington, N.C. 27889.
