The plan was to spend a couple of hours checking a few stragglers who stopped by with kids and car seats in tow.
That plan quickly changed as a line of cars formed outside Washington Pediatric Monday morning.
“It was just unreal,” said Sara Cutler, organizer of Monday’s car seat check.
After seeing the turnout, State Trooper J.S. Collins agreed to stay twice as long as scheduled.
The Beaufort-Hyde Partnership for Children had donated four brand new car seats for a drawing. The organization ended up giving another 10 to 15 car seats away to families with expired or unsafe seats and no means of replacing them.
Collins and Cutler did not want to let any child leave the car seat check in an unsafe seat.
Cutler said she plans to team up with the Beaufort-Hyde Partnership for Children for another check. She also plans to become a certified safety seat checker.
“We also will be drawing for 4 brand new car seats also donated by Partnerships for Children for anyone who would like to stop by and register to win,” Cutler said.
