In reading a recent Sound Off, I was reading about the response to Walter Williams’ column where the rich don’t pay their fair share: I agree with that, but you also have those that are sitting back drawing Medicaid and SSI that shouldn’t be drawing it, and they’re not paying their fair share either. So either way, there’s always somebody going to be not paying their fair share.

I hope Sound Off can help by advising residents of Beaufort Heights that the debris that they’re placing on the side of the road is not going to be picked up by DOT. That was done only after the hurricane when special funds were available. Please clean up your debris. Stop adding to it. It looks awful, and it’s going to attract rodents. Be proud of our neighborhood and clean your mess up, please.

To the person who wrote in Sound Off about the ducks need to go on Third Street: Take another street. There’s only 15 of them, and a bypass. Leave the ducks alone. They were here first.

One of the most important functions of a local newspaper is to inform its readership on the activities of local government. A recent editorial on the waterfront picnic tables was an outstanding example of informing the public as to why the tables were secretly removed. If the waterfront belongs to all the citizens of Washington, and not just a privileged few, the decision to remove the picnic tables should be reviewed by our City Council.

The thing the county commissioners could do to spur economic development is to stop televising their meetings. It is so embarrassing to watch; it must keep businesses away.

Congratulations on an absolutely excellent editorial. I think you have really hit the nail on the head and expressed what most of the people in the Washington area feel: that the waterfront was built for us and not for necessarily the rich people who have boats down there.

Government that is big enough to supply everything is big enough to take everything away.

I’m calling about Walter Williams’ column in the Sept. 16 paper. I think it’s really great — a review of our old civics lessons. I think most people have completely forgotten that any president does not have the authority to spend one dime of their money. I think everybody should read. By the way, I’m a 30-year, registered Republican.

I just read your editorial in regarding roadside hunting—that, together with the letter to the editor that day — the people do not recognize the difficulty of roadside hunting and attempting to catch dogs, shooting deer in front of dogs is entirely different from still hunting, both of which have their own degree of difficulty. The mere fact of shooting a deer from the roadside does not mean it’s any simpler, and in fact it is much fairer to the deer than being ambushed by still hunters.

The Motown hits Downtown was a fabulous article about the events held in downtown Washington this weekend. I am however disappointed that there was no mention of the band J13, which served as an opening act for Mr. Dashiell’s group. They did a fabulous job of warming up the crowd and getting everybody ready for the main event.

This is in reply to the person complaining about teaching 4-year-olds. I taught a pre-k program for 19 years, and 4-year-olds can learn a lot more than what is learned at home, especially if both parents work. If we are to compete in the world, we need to strengthen our education and that means providing opportunities for 4-year-olds whose parents cannot afford private preschool.

Bartow’s article today “Write Again,” I guess was supposed to be funny. But if that was funny, I guess I have lost my sense of humor completely.

I’m not against hunting either, but I am against hunting on the side of the road. I have been at my mailbox and had a bullet fly over my head and saw who was shooting. They claimed they were shooting across the road not down the road, but the bullet flew over me. It should be stopped.

You know how it goes: your mama told you, “if you can’t say something nice, don’t say nothing at all.” But about the national flood insurance program, FEMA — I better not say nothing. Thank you.

You cannot be a Democrat and a Christian at the same time. I cannot believe how liberal the Democratic party has gotten. It’s a disgrace. Wake up, people. It’s time to wake up.
