They say speed kills and at the end of the day Washington Redskins blazing-fast running back Elijah Burnett slayed the Pitt-Greenville Titans White team as he tallied four touchdowns to lead his team to a 26-12 victory in the 7-8-year old division of the Washington Youth Football League Saturday at Kugler Field.
“Elijah is very fast. He’s new to the team this year and he’s carried the ball well.” Redskins coach Tony Hale said. “He started cutting hard and he’s really swept to the outside a lot harder than he’s been doing and that’s the key for him. Some of his runs were power plays right up the middle but he’s just learned to cut it outside.”
Burnett put the Redskins (2-1) up 8-0 midway through the first quarter as he broke off a 33-yard run to the right side of the field and then scored the ensuing two-point conversion.
The Titans (1-2) responded in the second quarter when Sawyer Garrett burst through the Redskins’ defense for a 38-yard score at the 7:21 mark. The Titans failed to convert their two-point conversion and trailed 8-6.
The Redskins padded their lead later in the quarter as Burnett ran for a 38-yard score before ripping off a 25-yard TD run at the end of the quarter that put the Redskins up 20-6 at intermission.
“Our guys went out there and played with a lot of heart,” Hale said. “They gave 100 percent every time. We have some areas we’ve improved on and we played disciplined football. We’re not a perfect team but we’re working on it.
“Overall, the guys executed their plays and the blockers did a good job of blocking and the running backs hit the holes hard.”
After a scoreless third quarter the Titans threatened in the fourth as Markel Gibbs scored from 21 yards out to cut the deficit to 20-12 with 4:30 remaining in the game.
“We got off to a slow start but we tried to comeback in the second half but it was just one of those days,” Titans coach Greg Sisk said. “(DE/OL) Many Ortiz had a great game and he would probably get the game ball and Lashawn Atchison played well too.”
With the Titans on their heels, the Redskins sealed the deal when Burnett scored his fourth touchdown of the game with 29 seconds to go to go ahead 26-12.
