The young at art

In 10 days, the Turnage Theater plans to open its doors for the first-ever Main Street Project for young people interested in the arts.

The Main Street Project is the inspiration of Laura Scoble. In addition to owning Backwater Jack’s restaurant, Scoble has a deep background in the musical arts. She earned her bachelor’s degree in music from the University of Florida and has traveled the world over as a musician, conductor and show contractor.

“This is a great way to make two things happen at the same time,” Scoble said. “First is to do something for the youth in the community, and second is to fill seats at the Turnage.”

Scoble has enlisted professionals in a variety of fields to instruct children of third-grade age and up in multiple arts disciplines. The sessions will be held from 3:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays at the Turnage.

The cost of the 10-week program is $100 per child with discounts for families with multiple children. Scholarships are available.

“All they have to do is ask,” Scoble said. “I don’t want any child to be excluded because of financial need.”

The Main Street Project is free for children who attend the Beaufort County Arts Council’s Art Camp.

The 10-week project concludes July 31 with a concert at the Turnage that will showcase what the students learned. All proceeds from the concert go to the theater.

We agree that this is a great way to supplement the arts programs in schools while giving a financial boost to the Turnage Theaters Foundation.
