CHOCOWINITY — Southside snapped its four-game losing streak in impressive fashion as it rattled off 34 unanswered points in the first half to run by Perquimans 60-12 to earn a Homecoming Night victory on Friday.
Perquimans (0-8, 0-4) started off the game with an impressive drive that ended with I’Jawon Bond catching a 13-yard touchdown pass from Nathan Gardner to take a 6-0 lead.
From that point on it was all Seahawks (3-5, 1-3) as they responded with TD drives on their first six possessions of the game to take a 40-6 lead by halftime en route to earning their first Four Rivers Conference victory of the season.
“This was something we needed,” Southside coach DeWayne Kellum said. “We showed signs of what we can do on defense. The coverage was a lot better on defense and we finished drives on offense so I’m tickled to death.”
The Seahawks offense rushed for 493 yards on 41 attempts as Rokeem Miller, Andrew Jones and Darrius Whitley spearheaded the attack.
Miller rushed for 201 yards and three scores, while Jones tallied 141 yards and three TDs and Whitley added a 58-yard touchdown.
“When they run, we can go,” Kellum said.
Whitley got the ball rolling as his 58-yarder put Southside up 7-6. After that, Miller scored on a 28-yard dash, while Jones added back-to-back TD runs of 22 and 7 yards, respectively.
The backs were aided by a solid job by the Seahawks offensive line.

“We made some changes up front and with (Hayden) Bogart back at pulling guard and we’re starting to rake,” Kellum said. “We also got a strong effort from tackle Dwight Mattocks who has been solid all year.”
Southside capped off the explosive first half in style as Miller’s 60-yard scoring run gave the team 40-6 at halftime.
While the offense was running on high octane, the defense was equally dynamic as it recorded two interceptions and forced and recovered two fumbles.
“That was a much-improved effort,” Kellum said. “Perquimans did a heck-of-a job changing to a passing-style offense. They came out and threw the ball but we did some things that we needed to do like contain the quarterback and get on the quarterback and pressure his throws.”
In the second half the Seahawks added another Miller TD run before Jones broke off a 60-yarder in the third quarter to enter the fourth quarter up 54-6.
Southside’s final score would come on a Donshae Miller 29-yard run.
The Seahawks will be back in action next week when they play at South Creek.
