Redskins top Pirates

The Washington Redskins jumped out to a fast start against the Washington Pirates and never looked back as they topped the Pirates 28-6 in the 5-6-year old flag football division of the Washington Youth Football League Saturday at Kugler Field.
“Everybody played well. We had two or three different guys score, which is a bonus for us because we always try to spread the ball around,” Redskins coach Keith Mitchell said. “The offensive line played great and we pulled flags real well today. The other team is well coached and they played hard.”
Rashad Little got the Redskins on the board early as he sprinted for a 43-yard touchdown, and after a Cade Mixon two-point conversion, the Redskins took an 8-0 lead.
Little struck again later in the first half as he scored from 13 yards out to take a 13-0 advantage.
“Little ran well,” Mitchell said. “We really concentrated on him in the first half and he had some good runs for us. He made some moves and made some kids miss, he has good feet.”
The Redskins tacked on another score right before the end of the half as a Cade Mixon bootleg run set up a Perry Fields two-yard TD as time expired to put the Redskins up 22-0 at the break.
“Everybody ran hard, that’s the main thing. We were able to get some long runs and that’s a bonus,” Mitchell said.
The Patriots got on the board midway through the second half as quarterback Walker Heath scrambled into the end zone from five yards out to make it a 22-6 ball game.
“We’re not worried about winning, it’s just all about teaching these kids how to play ball,” Patriots coach Mike Gerard said. “They work hard and improve every day at each practice. They play their hearts out just like I ask them to.”
The Redskins topped off the scoring with an explosive 52-yard run by Taveon McIver.
“It was a good way to end the day,” Mitchell said. “He runs hard and when he gets in the open field he’s pretty tough to stop.”
