Wedding Announcement: Atkins-Carr

Emily Anne Atkins and Matthew Stuart Carr, both of Washington, NC, were united in marriage on Saturday, October 20 at three in the afternoon at First United Methodist Church in Washington. The Reverend Danny Allen and Derik Davis officiated. A reception followed at Washington Yacht and Country Club.
The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Ray Atkins of Washington, NC. She is the granddaughter of Mrs. Ruth Gardner and Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Lovell Atkins, all of Washington and the late Edna Nicholls Gardner and George Spencer Gardner.
The bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Stuart Carr of Columbia, SC. He is the grandson of Mrs. Elizabeth Nueman Payne of Richmond, VA and the late Mr. Murray Dallas Payne and Mr. and Mrs. Stuart Vasco Carr.
The bride was escorted by her father and presented in marriage by her family. The bride wore an ivory, A-line gown covered with re-embroidered lace. The bodice featured a slight sweetheart neckline, lace cap sleeves and the waistline was embellished with a beaded sash. The back of the gown featured satin covered buttons and flowed into a chapel length train. The cathedral silk veil was edged with antique lace from the bride’s grandmother’s and mother’s original wedding gown. The bride exited the reception wearing a dress that had been recreated from her grandmother’s and mother’s original wedding gown.
Mrs. Katherine Bland Carlough, cousin of the bride, of Raleigh, NC served as matron of honor. Bridesmaids were Mrs. Catherine Evans Cutler and Miss Landis Ann Woolard, both of Washington. Honorary bridesmaids were Miss Sarah Katherine Buckman of Bath, NC, Mrs. Jana Ingalls Hall of Blounts Creek, NC, Miss Michelle Kelder Hooper of Hawaii, and Mrs. Tyler Mays Johnson of Raleigh, NC. The bridesmaids each wore strapless, knee length, silk satin gowns in mint. The waistline of the bodice was embellished with pleats and petite satin flowers.
Mr. William Stuart Carr of Columbia, SC served his son as best man. Groomsmen were Mr. Britt Michael Boyd of Pantego, NC and Mr. William Luther Dean, Jr. of Greenville, NC. Ushers were Mr. Thomas Ray Atkins, II and Robert William Parvin, both of Raleigh, NC, and Mr. George Webster Parvin of Summerville, SC.
The wedding was directed by Mrs. James F. Buckman IV and Mrs. L. Paige Davis. Register attendants were Mrs. Ellen Elizabeth Cutler of Wake Forest, NC and Mrs. Katie Carr Whitley of Winterville, NC. Program attendants were Mrs. Jennette Parvin Daniel of Bethesda, MD and Mrs. Edna Brewbaker Franko of Greensboro, NC. Reading in the ceremony was Mrs. Elizabeth Matthews Chandler of Washington, NC.
An engagement party was given in the couple’s honor by family and friends on August 25 down by the river at Pamlico Plantation. A bridal shower was given for the bride by family and friends on September 16 at First United Methodist Church. On Friday, October 19 a bridesmaids’ luncheon was given by family and friends and held at the Washington Yacht and Country Club. On the eve of the wedding, a rehearsal dinner was hosted by the groom’s parents and held at Yankee Hall Plantation in Greenville, NC.
The bride is a graduate of Peace College in Raleigh, NC where she earned her Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration. She is a Pricing and Compatibility Analyst with NACCO Materials Handling Group in Greenville, NC. She was presented by the Terpsichorean Club in Raleigh at the 2002 North Carolina Debutante Ball.
The groom is a graduate of Barton College in Wilson, NC where he received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. He is a Superintendent with Stocks and Taylor Construction in Washington, NC.
Following a wedding trip to Antigua, the couple will reside in Washington, NC.
