PINETOWN – Darren Harris, a senior and Air Force JROTC cadet at Northside High School, recently gave his classmates a lot to think about during his classroom presentation on firefighting.
Upper level students within the ROTC management course were assigned a classroom presentation after receiving approval of their topics. The assignment provided management students the opportunity to practice public speaking.
Harris, a junior member of the Bunyan and Pinetown Volunteer Fire Departments, shared video footage of Station 73. He explained the importance of local volunteers within our communities. Harris showed students the equipment used by the men and women in the fire service as they face life-threatening situations.
Students asked numerous questions regarding their interest in the Junior Fire and Rescue program. Harris remained confident as he addressed each question with the appearance of a seasoned veteran, explaining what would be allowed if you were between the ages of 15 and 18.
Harris concluded his presentation stating his future plans of becoming a firefighter.
Upon graduation at Northside in the spring, he hopes to enter the Emergency Preparedness Technology and Fire and Rescue training courses offered at Nash Community College.
