Yesterday, crowds lined up for a plate of barbecue, a plate of chicken. They purchased cakes and cookies. They donated more than they’d normally pay for the same meal elsewhere because these people were there to support the volunteers who, in times of need, support them.
This was the scene yesterday at Pinetown Volunteer Fire Department. Instead of fighting fire, volunteer firemen could be found tending fires on the grill at their annual fall fundraiser.
If you missed the Pinetown fundraiser, you might want to stop in at Ponzer Volunteer Fire and Rescue’s fundraiser next Saturday, Nov. 10. Barbecued chicken plates are being served there from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. It’s just another opportunity to chip in for the supplies, operational expenses, new equipment, what have you, these crucial public service departments need.
Just as we rely on the volunteer departments to help us during emergencies, they rely on us to help them raise funds. Their time, they donate. The equipment they need to respond to emergencies of all types, however, isn’t free.
Pitch in. By doing so, you’re only doing yourself, and your neighbors, a favor.
