WILLIAMSTON — A rigorous off-season workout helped transform Bud Robertson’s right arm from a sling shot to a highly refined rocket launcher, which the Williamston hurler used to mow down opposing batters and rack up accolades.
Roberstson’s seven wins accounted for half of Williamston’s yearly total, leading the pitcher to be named all-conference as well as Tigers’ co-MVP and winner of the Keith Clark award, which is presented to the male athlete who exhibits leadership and excellent athleticism while maintaining a high GPA at Williamston.
Robertson’s mastery from the mound has also earned him the Washington Daily News 2007 Pitcher of the Year award.
Along with his 7-3 record, Robertson posted a 3.37 ERA while striking out 80 batters and issuing only 29 walks.
Robertson, who owns a mid-80’s fastball, said the biggest difference from last year to this year was the work he put in during the off season.
Since the time Robertson transferred from Bear Grass to Williamston in his junior year, velocity has never been an issue. Tigers’ coach Hank Tice raved about his explosiveness. Robertson’s biggest flaws were his mechanics and the ability to develop his breaking pitches, which the hurler was able to do this season.
Aside from honing his skills, Robertson’s off season workouts have allowed the pitcher to gain more confidence, which Tice cited as a vital key to his fantastic season.
Tice said the addition of a curveball and change up made Robertson extraordinarily tough to hit this season.
Robertson, who recently signed with Lenoir College, said he was excited to be playing college ball, but acknowledged he still has a lot to work to do.
Tice said if Robertson continues to work as hard as he has been, there is no telling how good Robertson could be in the future.
