Robert E. Maher, 83, of Litchfield, Mich., died Tuesday, June 12, 2007, at the Hillsdale Community Health Center. Robert was born Oct. 5, 1923, in Sioux City, Iowa, to Carolyn Lucile (Hunt) and Wayne Dennis and was later adopted by Rody Maher.
Following graduation from Oelwein High School, Robert graduated from the American Academy of Art and the Institute of Design, both in Chicago, Ill. He was associated with Montgomery Ward and Spiegel, Inc. advertising agencies and printing companies in the Chicago area. He was a salesman-designer for Green Printing Co. in Lexington, N.C. and a graphic designer at Northeastern Illinois University for many years.
Robert served in the U.S. Army during WWII and was involved in the photoreconnaissance in the Pacific.
In 1949 he married Margaret Quass and they had two daughters, Carol (Jeryl) Rawls, of Washington, N.C. and Joan (Dane) Sebastian, of Charlotte, N.C. In 1967 he married Doryce L. Sloan and she preceded him in death. Also surviving are his stepdaughter, Nancy (William) Tefft, of Hillsdale, Mich.; stepson, Robert (Mary) Gillett, of Northbrook, Ill.; one sister, Darlene (J.J.) Evers, of Albuquerque, N.M.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Also preceding him in death were his parents and infant twin brother (James).
Robert belonged to the Hillsdale First Presbyterian Church, Hillsdale County Art Guild and Jackson Artists’ Guild. He was currently taking classes at Studio Deeply Art in Jackson, Mich.
Visitation was scheduled 6-8 p.m. June 14 at the George White Funeral Home, Litchfield, Mich. Funeral services were 3 p.m. June 15 at the funeral home with the Reverend Carl Litchfield officiating. Interment was in Memorial Park Cemetery, Skokie, Ill., at 1:30 p.m. June 16.
