Belhaven celebrates Christmas

BELHAVEN — The true spirit of the yuletide season could be seen throughout Belhaven on Saturday during the town’s Christmas Festival.
A highlight of the day was the holiday parade, which featured such notables as Mayor Adam O’Neal and members of the town council, reigning Miss Independence Jordan Woolard, Young Miss Independence Tiffany Oliver and players for Belhaven’s Little Bulldogs football team.
Also showcased during the parade were a brigade of fire and rescue units from throughout Beaufort County as well as entries sponsored by local civic organizations, businesses and schools. The festivities were hosted by the Belhaven Chamber of Commerce.
And while having fun was the order of the day, the festival also provided an opportunity for area citizens to help those in need this holiday season.
“With the economy, there are several families that will have a slim to no Christmas,” said Melissa Ingrao, who coordinated the day’s celebration. “Although the festival is for everyone, it allows some not so fortunate to enjoy some Christmas activities and treats … (this) really makes all the stress of preparation worth it, because seeing all the excited children and being part of family memory-making is why we do it.”
New, unwrapped toys and nonperishable food items were collected throughout the day. And because of the generosity of a dozen local businesses, children enjoyed a variety of free games and activities.
And what would a Christmas Festival be without Santa Claus? The jolly old elf was on hand for the celebration, greeting spectators during the parade and meeting one-on-one with the younger set at “Santa’s House” on Main Street.
Christmas parade season in Beaufort County continues today (Sunday) in Aurora beginning at 3 p.m. The final parade is scheduled for Dec. 16 beginning at 3 p.m. in Edward.
