CHOCOWINITY — Students at Chocowinity Primary School recently took a stand by observing Bully Prevention Spirit Week.
The observance was held Oct. 22-26 and was coordinated by Leslea Jones, CPS school counselor.
“The month of October is recognized as National Bully Prevention Month,” Jones said. “In an effort to raise awareness of this issue, CPS students hosted a spirit week. Students wore clothing that represented ‘tag lines.’”
For example, the students kicked off the week with “Shade Out Bullying” on Monday and were given special permission to bend the Beaufort County Schools’ dress code and wear sunglasses to school. They also “Put a Lid on Bullying” by wearing hats one day, and opted to “Sock It to Bullying” by wearing the most colorful and unusual socks they could find. One day the students decided to “Team Up Against Bullying” by wearing shirts or jerseys representing their favorite sports teams; selections ranged from local recreation league shirts supporting the Seahawks to jerseys bearing the names and logos of favorite college and major league teams. The week concluded with the theme “Bully Free Fits Us to a T” as the students wore the special Chocowinity Primary School T-shirts.
The school carried the bully-free message even further, according to Jones.
“During the week, one fact about bullying was read each day over the intercom to help educate students and staff on the realities of bullying and how they can help fight against it,” she said.
