Food safety course for restaurants

The Division of Continuing Education at Beaufort County Community College will offer two sessions of a course on food safety and consumer health in January and February.

The course will be offered 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, beginning Jan. 29 and ending Feb. 19. It will be repeated Mondays and Wednesdays, beginning Feb. 11 and ending Feb. 27.

Both sessions will meet in Room 829 of Building 8 on the BCCC campus. The registration fee is $65. The textbook is available at an estimated cost of $65 and the required exam, $38.

Food safety and consumer health are among the most pressing concerns for the food service industry.

The course is offered through ServSafe, the industry’s pre-eminent food-safety training program that is recognized and accepted by more federal, state and local jurisdictions than any other.

A ServSafe certification will ensure restaurant owners that two points will be available on their sanitation inspections.

Foundation Board to meet Thursday

The Beaufort County Community College Foundation’s Board of Directors will meet at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, in the board meeting room of Building 10 on the BCCC campus. Reports from various committees, as well as the director’s report, will be presented at this meeting.

 

Business and Industry Services seminars

Business and Industry Services at Beaufort County Community College will offer several seminars in February and March of interest to local business owners and professionals. Cosponsored by the Washington/Beaufort County Chamber of Commerce, the seminars are as follows:

 

-So You Want to Open a Restaurant: There are many variables to consider when starting and operating a restaurant. In this two-part workshop, instructor Robert H. Doe will walk potential restaurant owners through the entire process. The workshop will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, and Monday, Feb. 18, in Room 828 of Building 8 on the BCCC campus.

-Strategic Planning for Entrepreneurs: This workshop is designed for people considering or beginning a venture into self-employment who want to improve the odds of a great start. Designed to help participants probe issues often ignored in the early stages of starting a business, the seminar will be from  2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, in Room 828 of Building 8 on the BCCC campus.

-Small Business Advertising and Marketing: Drawing attention to your small business is harder than ever before! Large chain stores, a challenging economy and the Internet have all made attracting customers to your small business a difficult and frustrating experience. But you can take matters into your own hands and discover what you can to do bring customers to you! Presented by the East Carolina SCORE chapter, the seminar will be from  6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25, in Room 828 of Building 8 on the BCCC campus. It is part of the core curriculum of classes for small business owners and prospective business owners.

-Recordkeeping and Taxes for your Small Business: This seminar will include instruction on understanding financial statements, dealing with financial institutions, filing federal and state financial and tax reports and when and how to use accountants. The instructor for the course is Keith Kidwell a tax professional with H & R Block. It will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, March 11, in Room 828 of Building 8 on the BCCC campus. The seminar is part of the core curriculum of classes for small business owners and prospective business owners.

Attendance at any Business and Industry Services seminar is free of charge but preregistration is recommended in order to reserve seating and to allow the college to adequately prepare materials. SCORE is a national non-profit organization of retired business executives with a public service mission. Through its volunteers, SCORE is able to provide free small business counseling and training through a network of their chapters and branches.

 

Students collect food for Pet Rescue

Business students at Beaufort County Community College shared their Christmas spirit with J and J’s Homeless Pet Rescue by collecting pet food over a three week period of time. Hundreds of pounds of dog and cat food were collected for the nonprofit agency which houses animals for adoption. All the animals in their care receive food, shelter, medical care, as well as treatments for flea, tick and heartworm prevention. The drive was organized by BCCC Instructor Ken Robol. Jim Thompson, co-director of J & J’s Homeless Pet Rescue, coordinated the pickup dates for the food.
