Six Pirates selected in MLB draft

GREENVILLE – Shawn Armstrong, Seth Maness, Brad Mincey, Mike Wright,  Seth Simmons and Zach Wright each heard their names called Tuesday afternoon as they were selected on the second day of the 2011 Major League Baseball First Year Amateur Player Draft. Mike Wright, a native of Laurinburg, N.C. was the first Pirate to be selected when the Baltimore Orioles chose him with the 94th overall pick in the third round. The right-hander is the fourth-highest overall pick in school history in regards to overall selection and the fourth Pirate to be drafted in the first three rounds.
Battery mate Zach Wright (Goldsboro, N.C.) was taken by the Philadelphia Phillies in the sixth round (pick No. 211) just before right-handed pitcher Seth Maness (Pinehurst, N.C.) heard his name called in the 11th round by the St. Louis Cardinals (pick No. 350).
Redshirt sophomore Shawn Armstrong (New Bern, N.C.) was chosen by the Cleveland Indians in the 18th round (pick No. 548) and Brad Mincey (Wilmington, N.C.) was the last Pirate taken on day two when the Florida Marlins selected him in the 28th round (pick No. 853).
Also selected in the 2011 MLB Amateur Draft were ECU commitments Cam Gallagher (Kansas City Royals, Round 2, pick No. 65 overall), Deshorn Lake (Boston Red Sox, Round 12, pick 382 overall), Rookie Davis (New York Yankees, Round 14, pick 449 overall), Shawn Morimando (Cleveland Indians, Round 19, pick 578 overall) , Jharel Cotton (New York Mets, Round 28, pick 852 overall) and David Lucroy (Milwaukee Brewers, Round 29, pick 881 overall).
On Thursday senior Seth Simmons was the sixth player from the 2011 East Carolina Pirates to hear his name called when the Arizona Diamondbacks chose him in the 40th round with pick No. 1204 Wednesday afternoon during the 2011 Major League Baseball First Year Amateur Draft.
Simmons joins Shawn Armstrong (Cleveland Indians), Seth Maness (St. Louis Cardinals), Brad Mincey (Florida Marlins), Mike Wright (Baltimore Orioles) and Zach Wright (Philadelphia Phillies) as other Pirates chosen in the draft.
