The Pam Pack is expected to have a mighty offense this season and on Wednesday Washington flexed its goal-scoring muscles with a dominant 9-0 victory over Coastal Conference rival West Craven.
Washington’s Alana Jefferson and Christian Heggie have been hot of late and the trend continue on Wednesday as Jefferson racked up three goals and Heggie tallied two to up the Pam Pack’s record to 3-2-1 on the year.
“(Alana’s) done a good job of creating opportunities for herself and her teammates. She moves the ball well and finds spots that clear space for other players to have an opportunity to shoot,” Washington coach Ed Rodriguez said. “Christian is starting to get really hot too and had two goals today.”
The Pam Pack got a wide variety of contributions in the romp as Emily Bohn, Rebecca Omonde, Robin Thompson and Ali Amaxopolous each notched goals against West Craven.
Rodriguez was happy to see his backups come in and make the most of their minutes.
“This is the first year Omonde has played with the Pack. She’s a junior but this is her first year on the team and she scored a goal in the first game of the year and one today. That’s pretty good for somebody who hasn’t played,” Rodriguez said. “Ali is a senior and that was her first career high school goal … and Robin had a good kick and was able to put it in the right place.”
Offensively, the Pam Pack sizzled as it passed the ball well and converted on its shot opportunities. The unselfish effort was one that drew praise from Rodriguez.
“We concentrated on making sure that we worked together,” Rodriguez said. “We did a lot of great passing today and we created a lot of opportunities for our teammates.”
While the offense had one of its best outing of the year, so did the defense as the Pack was able to keep West Craven off the scoreboard.
“All the defenders did well,” Rodriguez said. “They marked well and it was a total team effort. Everybody did a good job.”
Washington will be back in action on Saturday when it plays Rocky Mount at 4 p.m. in the Brittany Willis Memorial Tournament in Wilson. Rodriguez called the showcase tournament one of the biggest in the state and was happy Washington received the invite to play in it.
