Falcons soar past Pack

The hustle was there for seven innings but unfortunately for the Washington baseball team it did not translate into a win as the Pam Pack fell 11-4 to South Central in a Coastal Conference matchup.
“The heart was there and the effort was there. We played hard all night,” Washington coach Ryan Whitney said. “The effort was there and that’s what we talked about after the game.”
After two scoreless innings, South Central pulled ahead with an explosive four-run rally in the third to take an early lead.
Washington responded in its ensuing at-bat as Trey Brunson drilled a three-run triple to bring the Pam Pack within one, 4-3.
Brunson finished the night 3-3 with three RBIs to lead the team.
“Trey can be a really good hitter,” Whitney said. “It’s showed in spots. He’s working hard to be a little more consistent with it but he definitely gave us a huge lift tonight with that triple.”
The score would stay at 4-3 until the Falcons struck for two runs in the sixth to pull ahead 6-3.
Once again, Washington answered, but did not have enough firepower as Matt Dixon hit an RBI double to cut South Central’s lead to 6-4. Dixon would finish going the game going 2-4.
South Central sapped the Pam Pack of any momentum it had gained in the seventh and final inning as it racked up five runs to extend its lead to 11-4.
Pack pitcher Devon Van Cura allowed seven runs in six-plus innings of work. After the game, Whitney praised Van Cura, who was late to join the team due to a wrestling season that ended with a trip to the state meet.
“I think that was only his second or third time on the mound since wrestling but he did a good job for us,” Whitney said. “Anytime you come in late you’re always a little behind, but it was real good to see him throw how he did.”
