The Major Reading Blount Chapter of the DAR met on March 20, 2013 at the home of Vice Regent Betsey Lee Hodges, with Zelma Singleton and Betsey Lee as hostesses. After refreshments, Regent Johanna Huber called the meeting to order and led the Rituals, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance, American’s Creed, Preamble to the Constitution, DAR pledge and salute to the North Carolina flag. Chaplain Jo Ann Walker gave the devotional and Christine Ramon presented the Flag Moment.
The program for the day was the election of officers. Vice Regent Betsey Lee Hodges presented the proposed slate of officers and a vote was conducted. The newly elected officers for next year are Regent, Betsey Lee Hodges; Vice Regent, Reid Solomon; Treasurer, Becky Turnage; Recording Secretary, Susan McFarland; Corresponding Secretary, Mary Disharoon; Chaplain, Elizabeth Propst; Librarian, Colleen Lupton; Historian, Jo Ann Walker; and Registar, Johanna Huber.
Vice Regent Hodges called for program suggestions for the coming year. Susan McFarland suggested bringing a DAR genealogy advisor to present a program on discovering one’s ancestors, which would be open to the public. The chapter’s genealogical experts could lend their advice on research. Susan also suggested having a speaker present a public program on the commercial history of Washington, Bath and local waterways.
Regent Huber reported that she had presented a chapter pin at a JROTC event at Southside High School. Ann Cayton gave a report on conservation. Connye Dillon gave the treasurer’s report. Cathy Waters informed the chapter that she had presented 100 points to each of 6 local schools. The points were accrued as a result of the chapter collecting box tops and soup can labels to support education. The project to send greeting cards to veterans in VA facilities was postponed until the April meeting. Regent Huber announced that the DAR’s Continental Congress will take place from 26 to 30 June 2013 in Washington, DC. Anita Fletcher reminded the members that next month’s meeting will take place at the Brown Library on April 17, with Christine Ramon and Anita as hostesses. The meeting was adjourned by Regent Huber.
