The Washington Daily News you hold in your hand today is the product of many recent changes. Those changes are reflected in both content and design.
While the revisions appear significant, from a retooled editorial package to a fresh new look and design, our mission remains the same as it has for more than 100 years — serving our community.
As a daily community newspaper, our primary goal is to provide readers with local news and information. This includes news about your local government, schools, businesses, churches, friends and neighbors. It’s news from and about your community, news that’s often available no place else.
In order to more efficiently serve as the Voice of the Pamlico, we’ve made some changes to our daily content packages. You’ll see a stronger emphasis on staff-produced news and features. We’re taking a more aggressive approach to collecting reader news and photos.
The renewed, stronger focus on local content requires efficient use of our resources. This means some past features will no longer be published in the Daily News. Beginning with today’s edition, the newspaper will no longer publish the Comics package, Family Circus, Jumble and Celebrity Cipher. For puzzle lovers, we begin publishing a new Crossword and Sudoku in each day’s edition, along with a new Sunday puzzle package including Word Search, CryptoFun and Word Scramble.
Readers will no longer see syndicated columnists published in the Daily News. This includes Bridge with Phillip Alder, Dear Abby and other national or regional columnists. Instead, we’re sharpening our focus on local voices. We’re interested in hearing from you. For instance, if you belong to a local bridge club and would like to share regular tips or simply let us know who won your last tournament, contact us. If you have an opinion on something happening in your community, consider writing a My Turn guest column or letter to the editor.
